Bloomburg's dying dream

New Yorkers can rest a little easier now that the idiotic notion of the “West Side Stadium” has been shot down by both Silver and Bruno. Silver and Bruno didn’t exactly say “no” but rather abstained, which effectively denied the stadium bid the votes needed.
Poor Mike. It was his dream to build this giant stadium in Manhattan, and the main reason he wanted to be Mayor in the first place. Now Mike and his fat cat buddy who owns the Jets, (New York’s least wealthy Billionaire) will have to find someplace else for their crowed to hang out.
It’s good that this stadium thing is dead. It seems as if the only people who seriously wanted a West Side Stadium are the billionaires. Residents of New York City don’t want it. Long Islanders don’t want it, upstaters don’t want it… hell even the New York Jets teem don’t really want it. It’s not like the Jets are planning on moving away if they don’t get a new stadium. They are doing fine in the Meadowlands.
Now that New Yorkers are not going to be forced to pour $1 billion on a football stadium, now New Yorkers can focus on what is really needed! Affordable housing, money for schools and a RESPONSIBLE plan to develop the western railway yards.
The argument in support of the stadium that it would bring more development is short sighted. It has been sighted that stadiums in dense urban environments tend to deter from economic development and not attract. Traffic is a big factor here.
So it’s good news that the mayor laid to rest his beloved West Side Stadium. I’m sure he had to wipe a tear or two away from his face with his monogrammed hankie when he delivered the eulogy down in Harlem yesterday.

This is just what happens when big business gets its filthy mits on sport.
Here in blighty you only need to look at the farce of the MK Dons (dunno if it's made much news in America) to see how fans and teams get pissed on by short sighted capitalists with delusions of grandeur and quests to fill their boots till the point they rupture.
I dread to think what this latest Malcolm Glazier nonsense at Manchester United will bring.
