In this video I discuss the "Doll Test" experiment and how it was recreated recently and shown on CNN's America morning. I discuss racism in the Media, colonialism in the third world and the need for the working class to rise up and overthrow the capitalist system

The media has a strong impact on the public and is quite effective in manufacturing consent, swaying opinion, and even effectively distorts how people view race, gender, and their own bodies. Anorexia and bulimia have long been attributed to how woman’s bodies are viewed in the cooperate media. A distorted view of race, even one’s own race can also be attributed to the media.

There was an interesting segment on American morning on CNN today that profiled a 17 year old film maker Kiri Davis who has made a film recreating the “doll Test.”

The doll test was an experiment that was created by the civil rights activist Kenneth B. Clark who created a test to see how African American children view themselves. The children were shown two black dolls and two white dolls and were asked which doll was good and which was bad, and which they wanted to play with. The overwhelming majority of the African American children who participated in this experiment in the 30’s and 40’s choose the white doll as good, the black as bad and the white as the one the preferred to play with. In 1952 this data was used in the landmark case of Brown vs. the board of education to sway the opinion of Chef Justice Earl Warren who concluded that segregation “implied inferiority in civil society” and that it “may affect the hearts and minds in a way unlikely ever to be undone.”

In the video clip that recreated the “doll test” a black female pre-schooler is given two identical dolls different only in the skin color, when asked which doll was good and which doll was bad she chooses the black doll as bad and the white as good. When asked which doll most resembles her, after a long hesitation (and appearing as if she wants to identify with the white doll) she reluctantly displays the black doll.

It is interesting to note that subjects that were from outside of the US overwhelmingly choose the black doll as good rather than the white, which profoundly drives home the impact of the US Media in how it is absorbed by young people.

I have a book addiction.

I’ve been doing some much needed cleaning today and have come to a disturbing conclusion. I have an unhealthy obsession with books. I have possibly the largest radical library of anyone I know. I have books everywhere, in every room. I have books on shelves, stacked up on the floor, books in boxes in the attic, books stacked under things and on top of things. I have even given away many books and sold a lot of books on “Half.com” yet seemed to always end up with more than I started with. .

Naturally there are worse things to waste one’s money, time, and space on such as heroine, etc. Having a lot of books also comes in handy, yet mostly they take up way too much room and are pretty much just useless monuments to things I have read, intend on reading, things I have used as reference, or one day would like to reference, things I believe in and things I oppose. What an amazingly cluttered book filled world I live in.

Religious right and corporate right: An Unhappy Marriage

I truly wish we had known what Ronald Reagan’s thoughts were on the issue of stem cell research before he passed away. Here’s a man who was venomously opposed to abortion to the extent that he made banning of planned parenthood a prerequisite for aide to third world nations. A man who sat on his hands and did nothing when the AIDS epidemic came to light because he saw it as punishment for a deviant lifestyle.

However his deterioration before his family and friends due to Alzheimer’s made such an impact on his family that they are among the strongest supporters of Stem Cell research and federal funding for it. I would like to think that if Reagan had the ability to reflect on his condition and the possibilities stem cell research may provide to people and their families that suffer from wasting away in such a way, that it would have made such a great impact on him that it would have changed his outlook completely.

I do think that his family has an impact on conservatives that hold Reagan up to be a sort of hero. So I think that seeing him waste away from Alzheimers maybe makes some realize that everyone is vulnerable to it including the President. Of course the other motivation for conservatives is the desire to the United States take a leading role in reaserch and development which ultimately will translate into future profits. I think translates into a conflict on interest between the pro business republicans and the religious ones.

Bush's Veto of Stem Cell Funding

Seeing Hypocrisy in Washington is nothing new, we have all come accustomed to fork tongued politicians. However how overly hypocritical George W. Had even defended his right to execute the mentally retarded. A man who chose war in Afghanistan and Iraq over diplomacy, and a man who has given Israel a green light to indiscriminately bomb innocent civilians in Lebanon. The rest of the industrialized world must shake it’s head in disbelief at this a “superpower” could be so backwards that not only does it not provide federal funding of healthcare, but denies funding for scientific research, and yet continues to be the only so called democratic industrialized nation that executes it’s citizens.

Hillary Clinton and the Zionists

At a pro Israeli demonstration today at the United Nation’s building in New York City today Senator Hillary Clinton said she supported taking “whatever steps are necessary” to defend Israel in the conflict in the Middle East.

This coming while Israel is bombing mostly civilian targets and infrastructure of regions within Lebanon that do not have a Hezbollah presence of influence. I work the night shift (12AM – 9AM) at a residence for the developmentally disabled. Anyway, I started getting into a conversation with this woman from Haiti about… well you know one of those ‘old person’ discussions about how “kids today don’t know the value of…. Bla ..bla..bla”… ( Keep in mind we are both in our 30’s. )

Anyway, for some reason we started to talk about how there is so much crap in TV today and how there is just so many TV stations. I mentioned how growing up working class in New York we had one TV with 13 channels if the cable was working. When the dial broke off you had to use a pair of pliers of vice grips in order to change the station. Back in the day you also had UHF which meant that you could if you wanted to broadcast your own TV station. (Which nobody ever did except the University because it was 1) expensive to buy equipment and 2) the stations came out fuzzy. But still, it was an option.) I don’t know if there are stations broadcasting on UHF anymore… it’s now mainly used for cell phones.

Anyway, when I asked my co-worker what TV was like in Haiti ( Keep in mind that I’m 35 and she is 39) She said, “ I never saw a television until I came to the United States. When I was a child, we lived in a very small hut; there was no electricity, no indoor plumbing, or anything of that nature. We entertained ourselves after the workday by telling stories. I remember my grandfather, grandmother, and great grand mother all living in the same one room hut with us and would tell us stories they knew and heard from their parents. “

I was quite frankly awestruck. I mean growing up… the bedroom I shared with my younger brother may have been just as big as her whole house that she shared with a large extended family. She really does show me the high value of family and hard work. (She works two full time jobs, one daytime one nighttime and sleeps 3 hours in between.)

Somehow our conversation turned to food, I don’t know how or when, yet I remember mentioning to her that I once worked with a fellow from Guatemala years ago who told me that he could not drink the milk produced in our country because it was not healthy and tainted with chemicals. I admitted that at the time I was quite young and I didn’t know of such things that they did to the bovine in this country.

She told me that when she lived in Haiti that they lived from the earth and that everything they ate was natural. They did not eat canned meat, if they wanted fish they fished for it, if they wanted vegetables they grew them and harvested them. And when she came to this country (United States) she was amazed at how much chemicals were put into such a simple product as bread. She was disgusted at how much food people ate out of cans, and how milk in our country seemed to be a sickly substitute for the real thing she knew in Haiti.

“I wonder…” She asked reflectively, “What kind of a society are we raising here in America? I have seen children with C or D cup breasts in America who are only 11 or 12. I don’t remember seeing such things growing up in Haiti.” She said. I confirmed her suspicions that this was all fairly new to our diet by telling her that few children our age developed as quickly.

It is interesting; up until now I had always considered organic foods to be somewhat bourgeois. However hearing what she has to say about the difference between life in Haiti and the United States, now truly has me worried for our children.

A War like Peace.

Is war ever really truly over? Surely it may say so on the treaties our leaders may sign. They may stand for a photo op on the deck of a ship in front of a banner proudly proclaiming “mission accomplished.” Yet even when an end is proclaimed to a period of armed conflict is war truly over? Even when troops come home the impact of the armed conflict continues to affect the people involved.
The U.S. involvement in Vietnam officially ended in 1975, however even today the impact of that conflict still affects the lives of U.S. Veterans and citizens of Vietnam (of all generations.) More than 30 years after the defoliant Agent Orange was sprayed over 25% of the nation’s forests, (over 72 liters) millions which had survived the war are dying, having serious medical problems, and the numbers continue to grow as more U.S. Vietnam veterans are discovering health problems due to exposure and 3rd generation Vietnamese are being born with serious birth defects.
Deep in war torn Africa the war in the Congo has been over for three years now according to treaties signed by previously warring parties. However people continue to die due to the conflict. “3.9 million People have died from war related causes since the conflict ended in the Congo,” Time Magazine June 5, 2006. How can people continue to die from a war that has been over you may inquire? The news seems to be reporting that all is well in the Congo and in fact the first real election in forty years is due to be held this summer.
There are various contributing factors for such a high death toll in a “time of peace.” For one the Congolese Army in which had been formed as a symbol of protection and reunification of the country, in an attempt to flush out rebel holdouts in the east have gone on a murderous rampage. They have raised villages, raped and murdered innocents, and carried out brutal executions. The years of war has fractured the social structure of the Congo. It has left a legacy of brutality and a crumbled infrastructure. Poor sanitation, disease, dislocation and malnutrition. Mass devastation caused by illnesses long controlled and prevented by western medicine.
The International Rescue Committee claims that war related conditions are responsible for 1250 Congolese deaths everyday. Most of the disease and malnutrition would not exist during typical periods of peace for the region. What makes matters even worse is that while the Congo is the second largest country in sub Saharan Africa, and largely considered ungovernable it is also very low on the international donors list.
I think time Magazine has touched on the heart of the problem in the Congo when it said, “ Yet because Congo is so rich in resources it’s problems when left to fester tend to suck it’s neighbors into a vortex of exploitation and chaos. And fixing the Congo is essential to fixing Africa.
Western countries seem to be appeased in the fact that at least Congolese warring parties are abiding by treaties and monitored by U.N. Troops. However people in Congo continue to live in a “peace” that looks like “war.” This I feel is all further proof that those who are most quick to rush into a war do not know the full price of war.
War may look all good on paper and treaties that are not worth the paper they are written on may be abided yet the people continue to suffer. While previous warring parties continue to struggle for power. The struggle between these two parties (as in most wars) has little to do with the will of the people or need of the people but over who controls valuable resources.

Bourgeois Revolutionaries

There are many reasons why individuals become interested in class struggle, however essentially one can boil them down into two categories. Those inspired by personal struggle and strife and those motivated by intellectual curiosity and fads.

For people like me who belong in the first category, the writing has always been on the wall even though we haven’t always known what the solution is. You grow up seeing your parents struggling to get by from day to day and put food in your mouth. You see your neighbors evicted and thrown out in the street because their jobs have been moved overseas and they can’t find work. You see your friend’s mother pass away because she can not afford her medication and makes too much to get government assistance.

Everyday you see good hard working people harassed and treated like criminals because they possibly may not have papers to prove they have a right to work in this country. Than one day, war breaks out and you see your friends, (maybe even you) go off to kill some people in a foreign land. But when they come back things seem to be much worse for them yet to get any kind of help for illness cause by military service will take decades of court battles because our government isn’t ever wrong. Than your dear friend whose mother passed away and turned to heroine to deal with the pain is diagnosed with AIDS but any kind of cure is far off because GOD tells our president that he is punishing a deviant lifestyle.

Than one day you pick up a pamphlet or a book by some socialist thinker or other and a little switch in your head is clicked and a light goes on. Suddenly you see the writing on the wall that has always been there for you to see. (Mid you that the above are just examples and do not reflect any particular individual.)

The second category which is comprised of both the intellectual and the fad follower are not really from the working class yet have dove head first into ideology. Now to be fair, I have known some of this category that have been apt enough to see the writing on the wall. Most however seem to take to Marxism as others do to religion. Perhaps they like punk rock and were told that true punk rock fans are all anarchists, or perhaps they like the band Rage Against The Machine a bit more than is healthy. Whatever their reasons, for some the experience may be a profound one that can change their lives and perhaps define it like individuals such as Ernesto “Che” Guevara. Yet sadly, for many of them it is simply a phase in their lives they will look back on with amusement such as I do to the time I had long hair and an earring.

The Catholic Church and the Irish

I had always thought that throughout history that the relationship between the Irish people and the Roman Catholic Church had been very one sided. I had often thought that the Irish people supported Catholicism much more than Catholicism supported the Irish people.

However, nowhere have I seen a palpable example of the said concept as an article I chanced upon in the “Daily Brooklyn Eagle.” I had been doing research on early anarchism in the United States, and was searching through archives of “The Daily Brooklyn Eagle” which are online from 1841 to 1902 when I found an interesting article on the Pope’s attitudes to Ireland on Nov 22, 1880.

The article titled, “The Pope discouraging Irish agitation” began by describing English troop movements into Ireland intent on putting down some insurrection. The highlighting paragraph however highlights the attitude of the Pope in Rome It reads, “The correspondent of the Times in Rome says: It is well known in Vatican circles that the Pope is much embarrassed by Irish affairs. He fully understands that it is not a question between Catholics and Protestants, but between friends of order and anarchists. He openly disapproves of the agrarian movement and sincerely desires to assist the English Government. “

Well, firstly please realize that the word “anarchists” in this article is of the variant of slander and not actual ideology. Sort of how Center left politicians are called communists (ex: Ted Kennedy) by the far right. So essentially what the Pope, or at least what his Vatican representatives were saying was that opposition to colonial rule was essentially lawlessness and opposition to legitimate rule and therefore in opposition to the Roman Catholic Church.

The Vatican was correct in that it was not a struggle between Catholicism and Protestantism. That is mere symptomatic occurrence of colonial oppression. For example, Irish Catholics were not the only people to experience difficulty with the colonial powers of England but also Irish Presbyterians, Wolftone for example was a Presbyterian. In my opinion, followers of Jesus would have seen the underlying issue of class struggle not law and order vs. anarchy (chaos). Catholics like most Christians however are not followers of Jesus but followers of Paul. The Roman Catholic Church is founded on the bedrock of Pauline doctrine which differs greatly from the message of Jesus.

I think this example illustrates greatly the thesis of Karl Marx on religion. That it generates more of a liability than a benefit to the masses. The Roman Catholic Church, from Paul to Benedict XVI has done nothing but support the rights of the ruling classes over the lower classes, impose hierarchal rule and theocratic dictatorship.

Does ‘Illegal alien’ mean non human?

Four miles from my house (6.4k) in the small village of Farmingville (Long Island) New York, is the front lines of the battle over immigrant day workers. The busy intersection of North Ocean Avenue and Horseblock road in Farmingville has gained national interest as Americans battle over the issue of immigration to the U.S.

For years the busy intersection has been the focal point for immigrant day laborers to congregate in the early mornings waiting employers (landscaping, construction, etc) to pick them up and give them work for the day. The intersection is fairly well located in the center of the island and near the Long Island Expressway so that employers traveling west to New York City or East to Montauk Point can easily swing by the intersection to pick up a few day laborers.

This has spurred an intense battle over the past few years between local residents of Farmingville who want the local government to do something about them as they view the laborers as an “eyesore,” and civil rights groups, unions, and religious groups who assert that workers regardless of legal status deserve human rights and dignity. A proposal for a “hiring hall” had been proposed a few years ago that would provide more safety, human dignity, and at the same time remove the “unsightly” spectacle of hundreds of day laborers congregating at the intersection. The proposal however was venomously shot down by local residents however who saw the proposal as legitimizing undocumented workers.

The battle has intensified over the past few days when a “flop house” had been raided and closed down for renting a single family home to over 40 day workers. Yesterday, (Monday June 21) the workers were locked out of the house without being provided the ability to secure their belongings, or without being provided an alternate place to live. The town of Brookhaven asserted that it was Suffolk County’s problem, while the county insisted that it was the town’s duty to secure housing for them. A local immigrant civil rights group tried to get a catholic charities group involved in helping, yet the Catholics claim their shelters are all already overcrowded and that they had been asked to help after the workers were thrown out in the streets.

Local residents who have been battling with the local government to do something are overjoyed that these workers are now homeless. They hope that law enforcement continues this form of action in order to “send these people back to where they came from.” It seems that the local residents are so full of hatred for the day workers that the workers no longer qualify in their minds as humans.

This all seems to be very consistent with the political climate in the United States, that only those who hold American citizenship are deserving of human/civil rights, dignity and respect.

GM assault on the working class

On June 7th General Motors, the American automobile manufacturing giant announced that due to rise of healthcare costs and a $1.1 billon market loss in the first quarter of 2005, they plan on eliminating 25,000 American jobs by 2008. The cuts will reduce GM workforce from the present 111,000 to 86,000, a drastic reduction from it’s workforce in the 1970’s of 600,000 American workers. General Motors is also attacking their present contract with the UAW in hopes to implement further healthcare cuts to the remaining workers who avoid the lay off axe.

It is simply amazing that these corporate giants, who wield enormous pressure in Washington to lobby in their interests, don’t use that power to relieve themselves of the burden of paying their workers healthcare insurance by supporting a national healthcare program. It may seem idiotic to even propose that capitalist giants even consider such an option as a socialist reform. However it makes pure economic sense. A national healthcare program would shift the burden of providing essential benefits such as healthcare to their workers if through a national healthcare program, that burden was shifted to the Government.

I find it amusing how the corporate media in this country express how U.S. auto manufacturers compete with Japanese and German manufacturers that do not provide these benefits to their employees. However they fail to mention that the reason Japanese and German companies are relieved of this burden is due to their extensive national healthcare programs.

Instead however, we see a corporate attack on the American working class by companies like General Motors, US air and United Airlines, and supported by the Bush administration, Republicans and Democrats alike. The for profit capitalist system is in dire crisis and the only way these money driven swine see fit to patch the holes in their sinking ship is to take back every gain the working class in this country has made in the last 100 years.

Bloomburg's dying dream

New Yorkers can rest a little easier now that the idiotic notion of the “West Side Stadium” has been shot down by both Silver and Bruno. Silver and Bruno didn’t exactly say “no” but rather abstained, which effectively denied the stadium bid the votes needed.

Poor Mike. It was his dream to build this giant stadium in Manhattan, and the main reason he wanted to be Mayor in the first place. Now Mike and his fat cat buddy who owns the Jets, (New York’s least wealthy Billionaire) will have to find someplace else for their crowed to hang out.

It’s good that this stadium thing is dead. It seems as if the only people who seriously wanted a West Side Stadium are the billionaires. Residents of New York City don’t want it. Long Islanders don’t want it, upstaters don’t want it… hell even the New York Jets teem don’t really want it. It’s not like the Jets are planning on moving away if they don’t get a new stadium. They are doing fine in the Meadowlands.

Now that New Yorkers are not going to be forced to pour $1 billion on a football stadium, now New Yorkers can focus on what is really needed! Affordable housing, money for schools and a RESPONSIBLE plan to develop the western railway yards.

The argument in support of the stadium that it would bring more development is short sighted. It has been sighted that stadiums in dense urban environments tend to deter from economic development and not attract. Traffic is a big factor here.

So it’s good news that the mayor laid to rest his beloved West Side Stadium. I’m sure he had to wipe a tear or two away from his face with his monogrammed hankie when he delivered the eulogy down in Harlem yesterday.

McNamara and the Bomb

I had known after watching the document “Fog of War” that Robert McNamara,former secretary of defence during the Vietnam War, had recanted many of his hawkish positions during the time. Knowing this however, I was still taken aback by his statement Saturday;

“If I were to characterize US and NATO nuclear policies in one sentence, I would say they are immoral, illegal and militarily unnecessary.”

The now 88 year old McNamara had actually sped up U.S. production of warheads, and helped to formulate the U.S. Nuclear defense strategy. Now apparently he had come into conscience and regrets his former hawkish positions.

He did make the distinction however between “cold war” strategy and “post-cold war” strategy. He says that out of 6000 warheads, the US has 2000 on “hair trigger alert” which is unnecessary today. With Iran, North Korea and others close to developing long range warheads, it becomes quite obvious that there is great need for instituting international policy which will reduce such a threat. McNamara called for a policy which would require the “five declared nuclear powers” to take their weapons off “hair trigger alert.”

I believe that we need to seriously consider bringing the age of such weapons to an end. We have no real need for them in the modern post cold war era. Calling for the five declared nuclear powers to take their weapons off hair trigger alert is a good start. We need to seriously consider the total elimination of nuclear weapons, starting with the five declared nuclear powers.

“Ten most harmful Books”, According to a conservative panel….

So, I was watching the “Washington Journal” this morning, and this rather unimpressive stuffed shirt is on there talking about this wonderful list he had compiled of the most “harmful books in the 19th – 20th centuries. He claims that he hadn’t known the politics of the individual scholars who participated in compiling the list… however when you look at what books are on the “most harmful” list… you needn’t even make a quick look at the website the list is found on, to confirm that these people are conservatives.

Here’s the list on their website ------------

http://www.humaneventsonline.com/article.php?id=7591]

I also liked the comments on this list on this blog:

http://steamedpenguin.com/journal/

What shocked me...(besides the fact that I have and like many of the books on the list) is that Coming of Age in Samoa by Margaret Mead was on this list. As someone with a BA in anthropology, you can imagine that I have read at least several books by Mead. "Coming of Age in Samoa" depicts a free, egalitarian society, which is not haunted by a wrathful God. A society where according to Mead, coming of age was easier due to the relaxed nature of Samoan society. Few wars, jealousy, rape, and revenge were also rare. There was also the abundance of sexual freedom, which you can imagine means that adultery was not a serious offence.
Perhaps it is within the last few pages of the book which these "scholars" find most "harmful" to society. Mead compared Samoan society to her own American society and thus had stated; “If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place”.
A dangerous call for equal rights perhaps?

Can you retract a retraction?

When I had first head that the upsurge of violence and “Anti-American” sentiment in the Muslim world was caused by a Newsweek article which clamed the Koran was “flushed in a toilet,” I believed it. Maybe I didn’t believe that a book of its size could actually go down the john (being a former plumber I kind of knew that one) yet I did believe that U.S. troops has it in them to commit such acts.

The Abu Grabe prison scandal is enough proof to me that the U.S. Military and Government are not above abusing one of the world’s most followed religions for interrogation, or just plain fun. While Abu Grabe was mostly acts of humiliation and inhumanity, it was mentioned that dogs had been brought into the scene. This is the case where religion came into play in the Abu Grabe prison scandal, for a dog is considered to be a filthy animal and there are strict taboos concerning dogs and Islam. I also question how much a grunt in the U.S. Army would have known about this taboo, and feel that the orders for use of them came from higher up.

It is with this knowledge, in addition to the knowledge as a U.S. Navy Vet that military people can be quite vulgar at times; that I had no doubt that such acts took place. However I was astonished to find out that Newsweek had been forced to retract their story which was printed in their international edition, due to an informant who pulled his support from the story. While I realize I will be in jeopardy of being taken for a conspiracy theorist… I make the assumption that his pulling back his statement did not come forth without extreme pressure from influential sources.

Now (bringing us up to date) we learn that the story as published by Newsweek international was correct all along. Maybe the Koran wasn’t exactly “flushed down the toilet,” however it was surely stepped on, kicked, soaked with water, and “accidentally” urinated on.

When I was in the Navy, and we were pulling into United Arab Emirates, I remember being told by my superiors that showing of one’s feet to people of Islamic faith was considered to be an insult to them. So I was warned not to sit with my feet up in U.A.E. in 1995, I am quite sure that the people that stepped on, kicked, threw water on, and urinated on a Koran, knew how this was an insult to the Islamic world.

I had always realized how poor of a reputation Americans had in Europe and the Middle East from being stationed there in the 90’s. What’s worse that a wanna be fake ass preppie cowboy president making a fool of our nation, and spurring on the same sentiment that brought down the WTC, are some dumb ass G.I.’s having a bit of fun at the expense of someone else’s faith. However, I personally don’t blame the enlisted personnel involved, just like in Abu Grabe I think this goes higher up, however will bet that who is blamed in the end (if it even comes to that) will be some low ranking G.I. who thought s/he was doing their duty.

New Blog started on 6/4/05

I've heard alot about this thing called a "blog" lately. They even read off comments made on Blogs now on some of the major 24 hour news networks like MSNBC. Not that I ever expect anything I say would ever be aired by the corperate media anyway, yet I found it interesting enough to give this thing a try.

Therefore: here is my new (and my first) Blog.
